Additional information

Cited 33 times (Googlescholar) this paper answered the critical question in optical network design quantifying the value of dynamic vs static wavelength routing as well as quantifying the need for wavelength conversion in both cases. The significance of this research was in quantifying both the capital and operating expenses aiding the telecom operators and service providers in optimising the design of the optical infrastructure in response to the growth in demand. Underpins the OpenFlow standard and the evolution towards software defined networking (SDN). Research led to the 2013 IEEE Photonics Society Engineering Achievement Award to P.Bayvel.
