Additional information

Costambeys is sole author of the chapter: 'The Laity, the Clergy, the Scribes and their Archives: The Documentary Record of Eighth- and Ninth-Century Italy' (pp. 231-58). He helped to conceive the idea for the book and co-ordinated the collaborative research network that produced it. With Brown, Innes and Kosto, he is joint author of the introduction (pp. 1-16) and conclusion (pp. 363-76), which were the result of a series of group writing sessions and offer a radical alternative to traditional assumptions about this fundamental feature of early medieval society.
