The application of automated planning to machine tool calibration
<22> Constructing calibration plans for high-precision machine tools is costly to both the machine tool owner and the calibration engineer: it can cost in excess of £1,000 per hour for machine downtime. This work demonstrates the automation of the process of constructing calibration plans. Subsequent work (“Automatic planning for machine tool calibration: A case study”. Expert Syst. Appl. 39(13)) has shown that the system can improve the quality of expert plans by around 10%. This programme of work is in collaboration with the Centre for Precision Technologies at Huddersfield University, through which the domain knowledge and industrial links were acquired.
