Additional information
The stability of the membrane electrode assembly is core to the functionality of fuel cells. In the case of the platinum electrocatalysts, essential for operation of the fuel cell, severe degradation can be caused by residual carbon monoxide present in the reformed hydrogen feed stream. This industrially funded work (Johnson Matthey) demonstrated how controlled deposition of small amounts of active metal oxide onto a catalyst can mitigate the poisoning of the electrocatalyst, enabling prolonged service life and more effective use of expensive transition metal materials.
