On the basis of probabilistic reasoning, thought experiments and computer simulations, it was demonstrated that the Weibull distribution is a flawed model for the probability of failure of brittle materials.

The Weibull distribution with its strictly increasing function, is incapable of approximating a constant probability of failure over a loading region. Following this paper, the Weibull model has been firmly denounced by researchers with a significant research output, based on the erroneous Weibull model, such as Stoyan et al, in Computational Materials Science. This result contributed to the award of a higher doctorate (DEng) to the author.
