Correlated fluctuations carry signatures of gene regulatory network dynamics
Significance of output:
<28>This was one of the first of two papers exploring the possibility of using time-dependent correlations in fluctuations in gene expression levels to identify/classify topologies of the underlying transcriptional networks, and was proposed for a PhD project. The paper presented mathematically derived (and verified in stochastic simulation) signatures for different network topologies of regulatory control. The simplest of the networks studied in this paper were implemented and verified independently by a synthetic biology lab (Elowitz, CalTech). The increasing availability of time-lapse microscopic monitoring of fluorescence tagged genetic circuits will make many of the results testable in the future.
