Additional information

This paper describes the development of a humidity-responsive bilayer actuator that consists of an oriented polymer substrate and a liquid-crystalline polymer coating. The bending behaviour of the bilayer actuator was analysed, showing a large response to a change in humidity. The work, funded by the Dutch Polymer Institute (DPI), involved an international collaboration with Eindhoven University of Technology (Netherlands) and was presented at a number of invited talks incl.‘Composites Week Leuven’ (2013) and the ‘International Conference on Multifunctional, Hybrid and Nanomaterials’ (2013), It led to two patent applications (WO2013113877A1; WO2012084200A1).
