Additional information

This paper demonstrates for the first time that the elastic limit can be controlled by the size of the material. The key result from this work is that the increased strength of small structures is simply a result of size itself. The paper is a product of a long term research programme in small scale plasticity funded under EPSRC Grant No. EP/C518004/1. The paper has led to invited talks at Cambridge, Oxford, Karlsruhe and Erlangen Universities, the Plasticity 2011 conference and collaborations with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, the Austrian Academy of Sciences at Leoben, and Huazhong University, Wuhan, China.
