Additional information

This paper resulted from collaborations with Bridgestone, Thailand’s Institute of Scientific and Technological Research and Dunlop Tyres into the tearing of rubber. It explains the physical basis for tearing in rubber materials over a wide range of test rates and temperatures. The transitions in behaviour being determined with reference to the proximity of the glass transition and the torn surface roughness. Different aspects of this work were presented at five separate international conferences including the invited 2010 Rubber Foundation Lecture (London, UK) presented by Busfield as the recipient of the IOM3’s Colwyn medal.
