Dr Eduardo Aubert is a Brazilian national who holds a doctorate from the Centre de Recherches Historiques (Paris) and was awarded a two-year Newton International Fellowship to conduct research at Cambridge from January 2012. Under this scheme, which is delivered by the British Academy and Royal Society, applications are jointly made by the prospective Fellow and a member of the host institution's academic staff, in Aubert's case Professor Susan Rankin. Aubert's project is to understand the development of musical notation in Carolingian Europe in terms of the shaping of social interactions: case studies explore its motivations, the resources that enabled it, and the role of scribes. His research interacts in productive ways not only with Rankin's, but also with that of Dr Sam Barrett.
