Additional information

This paper received the 2008 Best Paper Award from the ASME Heat Transfer Committee. It is the first to show the thermodynamic benefit of injecting coolant into the separation bubble on the tip of a turbine blade. The output was a collaboration between the Universities of Bath and Cambridge, as well as European Gas Turbines (now Siemens) and Alstom Power. The research was funded by the EPSRC (GR/N33997/01; GR/N33980/01, £178k). The paper also led to a research project in Framework 5 (AITEB) at Cambridge.
