Paper analyses a novel configuration of switched reluctance machine (SRM) in which significant mutual coupling between phases is exploited (MCSRM), and benchmarks its performance against a standard SRM within the context of a representative driving cycle for a road vehicle. By combining a transient thermal model with models of copper and iron loss capable of dynamically predicting loss throughout the driving cycle, it is demonstrated that an MCSRM can achieve a torque density which is some twice that of a conventional SRM under these specific conditions, while at the same time also offering a reduction in acoustic noise and vibration.
