Aristeas (035)
Brill’s New Jacoby updates and replaces F. Jacoby, Die Fragmente der griechischen Historiker (1923-1958). It is a huge project, covering 856 ancient ‘authors’, managed by I. Worthington (Missouri) and an editorial team including K. Dowden, supervising the work of around 100 scholars. Each entry follows a standard format: text, translation, commentary, biographical essay and bibliography. It is published on line by Brill with other reference works (eg, Brill’s New Pauly, Encyclopedia of Islam). Dowden has written several of these entries including those listed below and their scholarly weight is best judged as an ensemble forming part of a particular encyclopedic resource.
Submission includes the following entries: Aristeas (035); Diktys (049); Skythen-Anhang (845); Ktesippos (844); Agathon of Samos (843).
Dowden is one of an editorial team of 12 (under Ian Worthington's general editorship) challenging the work of over 100 international scholars on the 856 ancient authors included in Brill's New Jacoby. He has edited the work of 36 authors since the project began in 2005, using his philological expertise to ensure consistent results across the volumes.
