Double-weighted statement

This monograph of 80,000 words (plus index) addresses adaptation in and of Zola’s novels. It required extensive research into areas beyond the boundaries of Zola studies as well as entailing detailed re-readings of Zola’s 35 novels. The book is the result of nearly three years’ work, one year of which was financially supported by an AHRC research leave grant. The volume advances a new vision of adaptation not as a parasitic afterthought in Zola’s literary works, but rather as entirely fundamental to his novels and to the overall cultural landscape of 19th century France.
