Additional information

Control of a totally novel single-cylinder generator concept is examined to assess its potential as a Range Extender for hybrid-electric vehicles. This innovation offers high efficiency, high power-weight ratio, and low noise through total balance. The completely novel control strategy proposed and tested (to give maximum power, minimum peak generator torque, and accurate piston position) has proven that free-piston control problems can be easily overcome. It has also contributed to 2010 patent PCT/GB2454360 being granted to the author. Support for publicly-funded hardware proof-of-concept bids have been given by Power and Energy Management Group, BAE Systems, Rochester, UK. Contact email: Stephen.Broatch@baesystems.com
