Passive shroud cooling concepts for HP turbines: experimental investigations
Provided for a turbine thermal designer, a new experimentally proven method for cooling rotor-shrouds. Utilising existing coolant air an improved coolant distribution is achieved.
The theoretical benefit is equivalent to a 30% reduction in shroud cooling air, or a shroud temperature reduction of up to 100K for the same amount of coolant used in conventional designs. The designer/manufacturer is able to take full advantage of the concept without introducing major and/or costly changes to adjacent components.
