Additional information

The first measurement of electric fields associated with rocks under compression. This started a new research field: electric fields in rock and concrete for structural health monitoring and led directly to a patent (WO/2007/107689) and funding from EPSRC (EP/J015938/1). Electric stress fields will be explored with the British Geological Survey who will be a major beneficiary. It has the potential to characterise the state of ‘health’ of structures and provide a trigger signal for de-convolution of seismic data from micro-seismic events. Contact: Dr. H. J.
