Additional information

This study develops an alternative and easy-to-implement technique which has been shown to provide an effective measurement of the rail vehicle ground speed. This novel measurement method can therefore be used as a replacement or supplement for the conventional wheel-based measurement to overcome the measurement difficultly in wheel slip/slide conditions, which is particular useful for traction and braking-control systems and also can be extended for automotive applications. The performance is evaluated based on a comprehensive vehicle model using one of the standard multibody simulation packages widely used by vehicle manufacturers and compared with International Union of Railway standard.
