Additional information

This paper extends nanoscratch testing to hard ceramic coatings (oxides and nitrides) on compliant substrates (PET, PEN, PMMA, etc) – and is one of the first papers to do this. It demonstrates that coated polymeric substrates can be tested and differentiated in terms of resistance to deformation. It also highlights the importance of loading rate and indenter tip geometry. Two coating technologies are compared and four polymers; all are commercially important. This is a collaboration between three universities (MMU, UCLan, Lappeenranta - Finland) and one industrial partner (MicroMaterials).
