Additional information

This is a highly multi-disciplinary paper, which combines surface engineering, tribology, thin film characterisation and microbiology. The work targets medical devices, such as pin tracts, which are a major source of infection and provides a possible solution to this problem by providing coatings that have good tribological properties and antimicrobial activity. Unlike many papers trying to combine coatings and microbiology, both aspects have been conducted by leading groups in their respective fields, making this a very strong paper. The work involved UK (UCLan) and international collaborators (University of Sofia).
