Additional information

The paper builds on research carried out at Sussex University into improving the performance of sensitive light detection devices by modifying the optical properties of these sensors. The work, funded by the EU, was a major international collaboration between UK photomultiplier manufacturers and academia, which resulted in improvements in performance and sensitivity of devices for medical applications (Esprit Project 26272 – IMPACT; http://cordis.europa.eu/esprit/src/26272.htm and European Commission IMPECABLE, Contract Number G5RDCT-2000-00372). In 2004 the team were finalists and lead engineering candidate for the Descartes prize (http://europa.eu/rapid/press-release_MEMO-04-196_en.htm). This work came directly from work carried for Electron Tubes Ltd, a US owned company, which produces photomultiplier tubes, and has immediate impact in improving their commercially offered devices.
