Graphene is extensively used within the field of electrochemical materials engineering, such as energy storage, generation and sensors. How do experimentalists fabricating such devices ensure that someone in China can recreate that of something made in the UK and reported in the literature? This paper answers this question by reporting for the first time a simple electrochemical protocol to determine the density of defects, viz edge plane sites (active sites) which are the origin of electron transfer for graphene and carbon nanotubes derived devices.
