Effect of centerbody scattering on advanced open-rotor noise
Significance of output:
An open rotor is an aeronautical propulsor which promises significant reductions in fuel burn relative to current generation turbofan engines. These engines are currently being developed by a number of leading aircraft engine manufacturers. The minimisation of noise is critical if open rotors are to become viable aeronautical propulsors. This paper develops a method for calculating the effect of centrebody scattering on open rotor "interaction tones". It is shown that the effect can be very significant. This analysis has resulted in the filing of a patent for lining the centrebody as a means of reducing open rotor noise.
