Direct numerical simulation of turbulent flow past a trailing edge and the associated noise generation
Significance of output:
For modern aircraft, trailing-edge noise is one of the main contributors to perceived sound on the ground (“The topic of fan stage broadband noise continues to grow in importance as part of the total noise radiated by aero-engines and will be a significant source in future engines.”, Coupland et al., 2007, Rolls-Royce plc). Also, aerofoil noise from onshore wind turbines considerably limits their public acceptance despite the economic and environmental need for renewable energy production. This paper is the important first step to fully understanding trailing-edge noise mechanisms.
