Profile:

Professor Peter J D Andrews is Consultant and Honorary Professor of Anaesthesia & Intensive Care, Critical Care Unit, Western General Hospital, Edinburgh. He has an international reputation in Neurological Intensive Care.

Research and links to the UoA:

Professor Andrews has sustained an active, externally-funded research programme over many years. Research streams include “Direct Brain Cooling” studies, which have attracted external funding of £250K+ and considerable public recognition. This work has lead to grant funding to develop non-invasive measurement of regional brain temperature using magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

He has held 6 grants during the REF2014 period. He is Chief Investigator of the EUROTHERM3235 Trial (www.eurotherm3235trial.eu), investigating the use of titrated hypothermia after traumatic brain injury in patients with raised intracranial pressure. This attracted funding of £900K from the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine for the pilot and the National Institute for Health, Health Technology Assessment Board awarded £2.18 m. (2012) for the trial's main phase.

His University of Edinburgh UoA4 collaborators include: Dr Malcolm MacLeod, Professor Joanna Wardlaw and Professor Ian Marshall. He is a member of Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences.

In the REF2014 period he has been supervisor of 3 PhDs and 1 MD.

Professor Brian W. Fleck is Consultant Paediatric Ophthamologist and Honorary Professor, Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion Edinburgh, Royal Infirmary Edinburgh, Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh and Child Life and Health, University of Edinburgh. He is a member of Child Life and Health, University of Edinburgh.

Professor Fleck has an extensive list of high profile research publications. Current research interests include: development of new technology for visual field measurement in children; Retinopathy of Prematurity clinical trials and laboratory models; Retinal haemorrhages in child abuse clinical studies; Paediatric uveitis trials.

He was a founding member of a research group which has developed a new technology called “Saccadic Vector Optokinetic Perimetry", for the measurement of visual fields in children. Profile:

Dr Robin Grant is Consultant Neurologist and Honorary Part-time Senior Lecturer, Department of Clinical Neurosciences, Western General Hospital, Edinburgh.

Research and links to the UoA:

Grant's research interests include: clinical outcome Indicators in Neuro-Oncology; Tumour associated epilepsy; depression and brain tumours; decision-making capacity in brain tumours.

He runs the Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences' (CCBS) Brain Cancer research group. The group undertakes several basic science and clinical research programmes, in addition to being a major contributor to clinical trials, through Cancer Research UK and the European Organisation for Research and the Treatment of Cancer. Laboratory research includes collaborations with CRUK and focusses on proteomic, mitochondrial and stem cell studies. He is a founding member of the multi-disciplinary Edinburgh Centre for Neuro-Oncology (ECNO), which coordinates patient care and undertakes various clinical studies, e.g. mood and cognition and imaging studies. He has 25 peer reviewed publications since 2008.

He is: co-ordinating Editor of the Cochrane Neurooncology Group; Lead of the James Lind Alliance Brain and Central Nervous System Tumour Group; past President of the European Association of Neurooncology; member of the CCBS executive committee.

Since 2008 he has supervised two MDs and one PhD student.
