This single-authored chapter appears in the collection Livesey co-edited, The American Experiment and the Idea of Democracy: a book that emerged from a long-term research collaboration with Ella Dzelzainis on nineteenth-century transatlanticism alongside a further co-edited journal special issue. Livesey co-wrote the substantial introduction to the book and shared the work of recruiting and editing the contributions of this interdisciplinary volume. For REF purposes Livesey and Dzelzainis have agreed that their contribution to the introduction and editorial work is 50%.
