Additional information

A major problem for SOFC anodes is oxidation of Ni during service leading to permanent dimensional changes and catastrophic cell damage. This paper quantifies these changes and reveals the underlying mechanism. The results were used in related work by the authors to predict the oxidation tolerance of SOFCs and show how the microstructure can be changed to alleviate the problem. The research led to involvement in EU projects SOFC600 and SOFC-Life and has been used by other groups (EPFL, Lausanne; DTU Risoe; CEA Grenoble) and developers (Ceres Power) to improve cell redox tolerance.
