Additional information

Written in collaboration with internationally recognised clinicians and neuroscientists, the measurement techniques developed overcame the fundamental problem of reliably measuring dynamic position of the upper-limb using markers attached to soft tissue, enabling robust evidence of recovery post stroke and functional coupling between upper and lower arm segments to be gathered. This fundamental neuroscience insight highlights the need for upper-limb physiotherapy robots to provide coordinated movement patterns, setting the standard for robot controller algorithms. Both the measurement system developed and controller algorithms designed to promote coordinated movement, have subsequently been used in high-quality UKCRN portfolio clinical studies (UKCRN-ID:2142, 7951 and 11531).
