Detailed studies of micro-mechanisms of small crack growth in high strength aluminium alloys illustrate the complexity of describing and predicting crack growth in near threshold regions. It underscores long-term studies by both authors into the determination of fatigue life based on stochastic models of crack advance as a function of grain orientation, crack size and local microstructure. Such studies have been crucial in establishing confidence in threshold-based approaches to lifing as required, for example, in impact case study 3b 1 (Mark Dixon, Rolls-Royce plc).
