Research for this pioneering monograph began in 2001, resulting in a number of guest lectures, papers, and publications over the ensuing decade (the latter listed under 'Acknowledgements'). 'Lives of the RAF' (German Life and Letters, 2003) was submitted to RAE 2008. The topic was Preece's sole focus from May 2009 to January 2012 (just over 40% of the census period). The quantity, detail, and diversity of the primary material (more than 60 novels, a similar number of films, plus other sources) made the project especially labour-intensive, as each needed to be first identified, then critically evaluated.
