Double-weighted statement

This substantial monograph provides a synthesis of primary sources not previously attempted and places this material in a novel, cross-disciplinary framework drawing on archaeology, visual culture studies, museology and critical historiography. In the words of the external reviewers appointed by OUP, it is a “revolutionary” work, “which will dominate its field for at least a generation.” It is based on fieldwork in the eastern Crimea, on archival research in St. Petersburg, Kiev, Odessa and Kerch, and was funded through fellowships from the Craven Fund (Oxford), the Getty Research Institute (Los Angeles), and the Centre Louis Gernet (EHESS, Paris).
