The Cistercian Order in Medieval Europe: 1090-1500
Begun in 2005, this substantial volume emerges from seven years reading (in English, German, Polish, Czech, Italian, French, Danish and Latin), not only across primary source material but also archaeological reports, theological articles and highly localized publications. This material was consulted in archives and libraries in Rome, Denmark, Finland, Poland, Germany and Britain. This is the first work in English since the 1970s to present an argument-driven survey history of the entire medieval history of the Cistercian order. It also devotes serious attention both to the core of Western Europe and its northern and eastern peripheries (unusual in English historiography).
