The dynamics of analogue signalling in local networks controlling limb movement
Significance of output:
Here we develop original and innovative methodology to quantify the response dynamics of neurons that communicate by means of analogue signaling. The results reveal a wide range of characteristics, indicative of population coding and parallel and antagonistic neuronal pathways, unlike typical engineering control systems. These insights encourage further work to increase our understanding neural network function to achieve the very effective motor control evolved in locusts. It will provide deeper insight into nervous function, methods to assess how the brain changes under challenges caused by ageing and dementia, and inspire the design of engineering control systems of the future.
