Significance of output:

Understanding how faults contribute to deformation of the Earth's crust is of fundamental importance and is vital to the subsurface industries (hydrocarbons, mining, hydrology, etc.). This is the first paper to provide a comprehensive analysis of strain in part of the crust that combines contributions from direct measurement of large faults, small faults and extensional fractures. The method involves a hierarchical analysis of strain gradients and heterogeneity at a range of scales.
