Exposure of Salmonella enterica Serovar Typhimurium to High Level Biocide Challenge Can Select Multidrug Resistant Mutants in a Single Step
This study was the first to investigate the effects of biocides on bacteria using flow cytometry. This allowed not only detection of viable cells upon exposure to biocides that were undetectable by other methods, but also characterisation of resistant mutants which have previously been impossible to isolate. This enables future research into safe biocide use, critical for human and veterinary health. Work was in collaboration with Dr Mark Webber from Infection & Immunity at Birmingham, and used BBSRC-funded equipment (BB/F011237/1, TWO CoI). This has strengthened links with the Webber/Piddock research group, which continue in the form of collaborative research.
