Double-weighted statement

The monograph’s scope of investigation is broad, covering questions of politics, ideology, economics, culture and social change in the late Soviet Union. Primary sources range widely from archival documents, cinema, literature, and the press to memoirs and interviews. The diversity of material necessitated research in 10 archives and 3 libraries in Russia and Belarus, during several fieldwork trips. The book’s original claims about social change contest the widely-held view of this under-researched period as a time of stagnation.
