This paper reports one part of a long history in machine tool error measurement and compensation e.g. EPSRC(EP/I033424/1). The rigorous approach, considering the model of the machine and uncertainty of measurement, has placed this work at the forefront of this field. Impact of this work is evidenced by the author being a member of the relevant ISO/BSI committees. The work led to £350k of industrially-funded research, created a KTP and contributed to an FP7 project SOMMACT: NMP-SL-2009-229112. Further work in this area is one of the two key research strands of the EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Advanced Metrology.(EP/I033424/1).
