Additional information

This output models exogenous temperature effects on the structures of machine tools which adversely affect accuracy. Industrial consultation and literature reveals that compensation for such effects is limited, relying on costly environmental control systems. This paper validates a methodology for producing robust models suitable for compensation while minimising prohibitive on-machine testing. The methodology is used to inform design and create models for the geometric and thermal error compensation system (see case study), and enhance modeling accuracy. The work is part of the research covered by EPSRC funding (EP/I033424/1). A PhD has been initiated on this important topic.
