Additional information

This paper assessed the accuracy of different frictional rolling contact theories using a statistically oriented approach. The statistical method, which relied on input from realistic vehicle modelling on measured track data, provided real world relevance to the differences observed between the theories. Computer modelling of the rolling contact problem is a key part of rail vehicle simulations which are relied on heavily by vehicle manufacturers/maintainers and infrastructure managers alike. Greater understanding of the relevance of a contact theory’s limitations to a given application enables improved decision making.
