This PCT patent (Principal Inventor: Hyunkook Lee) describes a new method to code and reconstruct the spatial image of stereo audio signals using a time-frequency adaptive Interchannel Phase Difference cue. This invention overcomes limitations of the existing spatial audio coding method using only Interchannel Level Difference and Interchannel Coherence; it improves the efficiency of audio coding and the accuracy of the position of reconstructed stereo image for signals with time delay information. This invention was an outcome from the author’s MPEG audio codec standardisation activity and a similar method is adopted in the recently standardised Unified Speech and Audio Coding.
