This paper presents a new method for determining the multi-point contact between and railway wheel and the rail based on geometric constraint and elastic penetration. Dynamic simulations have demonstrated that the new method is fast enough to be implemented online in a time-stepping integration of vehicle–track system dynamics and is effective at handling the multi-point contact. It has subsequently been used by researchers in the UK and China to run simulations where rapid changes in geometry (for example at switches) made simulation difficult previously.
