Additional information

An impulsive noise detection/location system is described. The early conceptual work was funded by EPSRC grants GR/R17799/01 and GR/S49223/01, and application-oriented development work was supported by the Radiocommunications Agency (now Ofcom) projects AY3925 and AY4326 (contacts B Taylor and S O’Connel). Initially developed for policing unintended, illegal, emissions arising from faulty electrical equipment (especially thermostats), the technology has found additional commercial application in the location of power systems insulation defects through the detection of partial-discharge radiation. The spin-out company Elimpus (http://www.elimpus.com/) now uses technology directly descended from that described in the paper to provide electricity supply industry survey services world-wide.
