Additional information

The paper summaries research work completed to develop a damage model to predict the deterioation of the surface of a railway wheel. Validation of the model against field observation data, gathered from monitoring of wheel damage on a number of fleets, is presented along with a review of the influntial parameters to the generation of wear and rolling contact fatigue damage and resulting wheelset life. The paper received encouraging comments from the reviewers including: "The authors are to be congratulated for their earnest attempt to simulate the loading history of RCF effects and to differentiate the damage on different wheels"
