Additional information

To the best knowledge of the authors this paper is the first to demonstrate a robust and reliable general purpose means of monitoring the integrity and condition of downstream mechanical components from the motor current signature analysis of the electric motor prime mover. As such the paper provides the basis for whole-machine monitoring from power supply parameters. The results of this (and follow-on) work have been used extensively in long-term collaborative R&D projects with Rolls-Royce Marine, and they remain one of the mainstays of the approach to the remote health monitoring of thrusters, diesel generator sets and winches.
