Additional information

This research was funded through the Government’s Landfill Tax Credit Scheme and commissioned by SITA Environmental Trust. The results mitigate the environmental consequences of runoff from open composting arising from the expansion of the composting industry as a result of the EU Landfill Directive (Stephen.wise@neales-waste.co.uk). The research findings have been instrumental in generating a portfolio of spin-off research on passive / low energy wastewater treatment ranging from demonstration projects (e.g. EU-LIFE LIFE04 ENV/UK/809 €697k), strategic industrial research (david.knaggs@albionwater.co.uk) and fundamental research on the microbial ecology of biofiltration and its implications for engineering resilience (EPSRC EP/G005788).
