Additional information

This method allowed the first comparison of policy-level risks across Defra’s remit and was reported to Defra's Science Advisory Council in 2012 (www.defra.gov.uk/sac/files/sac-12-04-jan-risk-paper.pdf) . Championed by Defra’s Chief Scientific Advisor, this comparative analysis supported Board-level decision-making by comparing strategic environmental risks for the first time. The work is now used to build a longer-term view of policy risk; critical now Government funding is under pressure. Follow-on funding from Defra on environmental futures (Contract SD0339 £1.8m) is allowing further development for policy risks emerging over longer time frames (Edgar.Black@defra.gsi.gov.uk).
