Additional information

This paper was awarded the Medal of Distinction of The Royal Institution of Naval Architects in 2010. The research was supported by EPSRC grant GR/S95435 (£160k). The technique developed during the work has been incorporated in a software tool, called Wave-X, providing a service to naval architects to predict the response of ships and offshore structures in extreme ocean waves. (See http://www.cranfield.ac.uk/soe/wave-x).
