Additional information

The development of a new series of liquid crystalline materials, based on macrocyclic compounds and surfactants described in this paper, resulted in a series of sensor materials that gave optical responses on binding environmental pollutants. An output of this work and other work led Leksing Ltd (www.leksing.co.uk) to fund a project to investigate these and other materials immobilised on optical fibre gratings to allow quantification of waterborne or airborne pollutants.
