Measurement and CFD prediction of heat transfer in air-cooled disc-type electrical machines
It is shown that Computational Fluid Dynamics predictions sometimes give high fidelity results but in many cases, significant departure occurs particular in the transition region between laminar and turbulent flows in small air gaps. This has significant implications for design of power density electrical machines which rely on quality results, now provided in this new paper. This paper was invited to the Journal following award of the IEEE Prize for technical competence at the 35th IECON conference. The paper emphasises the need for more research in these problems, both experimental and computational to overcome current difficulties.
