Double-weighted statement

Becoming Dickens offers a radical reinterpretation of Dickens's career and a new direction in biography. To return Dickens's career to its original context and assess the historical contingencies of his early writings required extensive historical research, comparing Dickens with his contemporaries and examining the bibliographical environments (encompassing both publishing history and public reception) in which he first made his name. It ranges across the full extent of his published and unpublished works, including journalism, letters and fictional drafts, using archival material from the UK and USA. It is the culmination of 10 years of research into Dickens.
